What is Adventure-Based Therapy?

Adventure therapy is a powerful form of hands-on and outdoor-based experiential therapy that inspires emotional healing. Nachum utilizes physical activities such as, mountain biking, hiking, sports, and general exercise as alternative tools to interact with and build a bond with his clients. Adventure-based therapy provides opportunities for growth and self-understanding. Nachum specializes in working with adolescent and youth.

Why does Adventure-Based  Therapy Work?

  • Studies show that spending time in nature decreases levels of stress, depression and anxiety. Adventure-based therapy allows individuals to experience the therapeutic properties of nature. Nature can inspire newfound tranquility and positivity. It encourages more positive social behaviors and helps one focus on something bigger than themselves.  Furthermore, unplugging from technology and spending time in nature helps regulate mood.

  • Adventure-based therapy is successful because it removes individuals from mental health settings and allows them to reflect on themselves and their triggers in a more natural, less stressful way. Adventure-based therapy patients partake in goal-based activities that provide insight into their unique mental traits and challenges. In addition, Adventure-based therapy promotes emotional healing by removing individuals from environmental factors that may be contributing to their issues and or helping them avoid confronting their challenges.

Conditions I Treat
  • Adventure-based therapy provides participants with alternative ways to better understand their thought process, behaviors, and coping strategies. Often an individual’s approach to solving problems in Adventure therapy will mirror their coping strategies they use in other settings.

  • For youth and teens, Adventure-based therapy offers an opportunity to take a more active role in their treatment. This helps them feel a sense of empowerment, self-awareness and responsibility.

  • Adventure-based therapy improves one’s understanding of risk and consequences, and his or her willingness to confront challenges.

  • Adventure-based therapy naturally promotes important social skills.

  • Adventure based therapy provides the opportunity to be physically active. Exercise is vital for mental health.

  • Adventure-based therapy encourages self-reflection. The activities that the patient engages in relates to and triggers past experiences; this makes it easier to reflect on his or her mental health challenges.

Testimonials

Our child in his late teens was starting to struggle.  We noticed an overall negativity in his behavior, a lack of interest in pretty much everything, and he was gradually pulling away from the family. He was questioning everything and feeling lost. We have a good relationship with him and we tried to speak with him, but no matter what we said we couldn't get through. He was not interested in speaking to anyone, and definitely not a Rabbi or a therapist.  We heard about Nachum Wasosky, and his different approach to helping through adventure-based therapy. To our surprise our son agreed. Our son goes weekly mountain biking with Nachum, and it provides him with a stress free, natural way to connect to Nachum that enabled him to open up in a way that he wasn't able to in traditional settings. All his questions aren't answered - yet, but we see a tremendous difference in his attitude and overall happiness. Thank you Nachum Wasosky, for helping our son find himself again.
